To Start A Family Genealogy

The best place to start a family is with the basics.  This can include your own name, your spouse and your children.  Then move up to the next generation.  Go back as far as possible; remember some of the information may be inaccurate.  People’s memories can be faulty and the information on some ancestor’s names or dates of birth and death can be remembered wrong.  Write down what is believed to be accurate, but when doing research into the family realizes that the information uncovered may not be what is expected.

A family will also involve plenty of stories that have been passed down for generations. It can be an important part of the family genealogy, so take the time to write these experiences down, can preserve them for future generations.

Once you have maxed out information from your family in regards to names and dates, the next step is to begin sorting through archived data to discover more information.  A family does take a lot of time.  Just spending time sorting through old records can be a time consuming project.

The internet has become a great partner in the pursuit of tracing family genealogy.  There are many web sites that can help direct a person in trying to locate more ways to acquire information.

There are many records that have been documented for centuries.  Land sales, tax payments and even census reports can all supply the researcher with more information on their family genealogy.  It can also be an interesting comment on where people moved and why.

If any documents are found that are a resource, it can be a good idea to make a copy of the documentation in order to have a backup to your research.  Documentation is always important when doing a family genealogy.  Remember to check into old bibles as a resource for family names.  Bibles were really used to document births and deaths that there may be no formal record for.

A family is not only interesting from a historical perspective, families can learn so much about their own ancestor’s struggles and daily lives.  Many people discover they have incredible stories that come from researching their family genealogy.
