The use of family crests in
Japan is usually said to have started in Heian era (around the year 750), but in
real life even when the capital city of the country was still in Nara (around
600) some people already put on some crests on their belongings. Samurai family
crests used to be emblazoned all over the Heian carts. These unique but
beautiful graphic symbols are the traditional Japanese "family crests" that are
deeply rooted in the life of the people. Also, there family crests for Chinese
surnames. The original models of Japanese crests’ designs were familiar objects
like flowers or Chinese patterns.
